"What about your marriage? Did you know that there are footmen today who are not interested in you and your wife living together? Are you? [...] They are against your marriage and will do everything they can to destroy it."
"I wonder how many of you women, in the middle of the day, have to watch "the Edge of Night" or "As the World Turns" or the "Hospital Report". Those programs are definitely designed to break you and your husband up. They are designed to ruin your home. They are not merely foolish entertainment but devilish entertainment designed to tear up your home. The sooner you recognize that, the better off you will be. The first time Bill is five minutes late in coming home from the office, you get suspicious. You say, "Yes I saw on 'Hospital Report' like this. I know where he is. He is flirting with some other woman." These programs are designed to bring suspicions."
"Not only that, but television is dead set on taking your children out of your hands. It's designed in that direction. It's moving in that direction totally and completely. Who is the hero of all the little boys and girls today? It is Mr. Tarzan and he is nine-tenths undressed. Boys and girls think that if they are to be a hero like Tarzan, they must pull their clothes off. Continually that is bombarding their eye. The Bible says, "if the eye is full of darkness, how great is that darkness." Continually television is telling them to undress."
"In a program on
Dac Tari in October 1967, this statement was made. You know that this is a program that has lots of animals on the programs and children like to watch animals. A leading character named Jack was in a room full of monkeys and typewriters. Jack made this statement "You give enough monkeys enough typewriters and enough time and one of them will eventually come up with a King James Version of the Bible or the works of Shakespeare." Did you hear it? This program is teaching your boys and girls that this Word of God which we are studying today is monkey business. It is nothing but what a bunch of monkeys could have produced."
"Your television is continually teaching your children things that are contrary to the Word of God."
*The above text and illustration was taken from the "If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do" sermon book.
Dr.
Estus Pirkle first preached this sermon on January 31, 1968. Imagine what he would have said about television programs today. Much worse things are said than that the Bible is Monkey business. Casual sex, broken homes and secularism reigns supreme over the entire entertainment industry today. Most people would probably dismiss what Dr.
Pirkle proposing is silly.
Our outlets of entertainment do greatly affect our worldview. It seeps deep into our thought life and changes how we view this age. The outlooks and attitudes of those we spend the most time with makes its mark on our lives. We may not consider spending our free time with adulterous, blasphemous, alcoholics, but some may find watching them on TV entertaining. If we spend lots of time with characters like this on TV, and come under their influence, we may begin to think, and eventually act as they do.
I am not sure what else to say.
